We have such a busy month ahead of us. I am so excited. I have a feeling from now until December it's going to be a mad roller coaster at our house! I love it. I am all about the holidays.
We are taking Derek to get pictures taking this weekend. We are combining Halloween and Christmas. Its so much easier to get all your pictures at once. We are going to put him in his Halloween costume then we are going to switch clothes and do a Christmas photo.

Or if you'd rather just have one picture pose you can get it in a few different sizes plus the free 8x 10 and free sitting fee. I hope that makes sense. My Derek

Night/mornings at our house have been pretty hectic lately. My almost 7 month old baby is still teething. This means sleepless nights. From about 1 or 2 am to about 5:30am. We have tried everything but the only thing that seems to help is Motrin. Something I wish I would have discovered a few days ago. Luckily, he is doing better now but that tooth is just not wanting to come in yet. It wont be long now, I hope!
On a good note Derek is growing like a weed. He is rather big for his age. He is almost 7 month old and weighs about the same size as his year and a half old cousin. He is in size 12 month clothes and he is in size 4 diapers. He drinks about five bottles a day and has one (2nd size) jar of baby food for lunch and another one for dinner. He is a big eater!
Derek knows a few words he can say "Mama" , "Dada", "baba" (which seems to be anything he sticks in his mouth), and "nummy nummy" (yummy)
Another thing he has been doing alot lately is trying to streak. Every time I am not looking he pulls his diaper off. I guess it more fun to be naked

Derek's new toy

As Derek grows he seems to get bored easier. As a newborn he could sleep all day and be happy. As a 2-3 month old he was perfectly content laying on the floor play with his jungle mat. (a mat on the floor with the toys hanging down over him) or the swing. But at 4months now that he can roll over those things bore him. He rolls over on his belly and tries as hard as he can to crawl then ends up getting frustrated and cries. So whats a busy momma to do. I love playing with him but I still need to get the dishes done and the laundry. I cant hold him all day long, can I? So I started searching creigslist. I found a Winnie the pooh exersaucer for $15. I was such a steal. It even plays music. It just needed a little bit of a scrub down. (which I was going to do anyways even if it was spotless). It looks almost brand new. Its in great condition and most importantly Derek loves it. It keeps him busy for a long time. He sits there and chatters to the toys. Its really sweet.

Things Derek has learned

Derek is four months
Here are things he has learned from newborn to 4 months:

1. Rolling over ( he wont even stay on his back anymore)
2. grabbing onto his bottle while eating. He wants to hold it himself but isnt quite strong enough
3. grabbing objects around him such as a toy or anything he thinks he can put in his mouth
4. scooting. (he really wants to crawl but isnt quite coordinated enough so he scoots but takes him forever to get anywhere. He usually give up and throws a fit)
5. He babbles and tries to sing with me
6. He laughs, smiles, and giggles,
7. He eats baby food (and tries to help by grabbing the spoon)
8.He looks at people when they talk and will follow people/things with his eyes

General facts about Derek:

1. He weighs 17.5 lbs and is 26.5 inches long
2. He wears size 4 diapers
3 He is in size 6 mo. baby clothes (but he can wear some 3-6 mo. stuff)
4. He hates hats
5. He drinks about 5-6 oz of formula about 5 times a day.
6. He eats about a jar of baby food a day (divided up between lunch and dinner)
7 He like to mess with stuff with he feet. He pushes the tray of his swing up with his feet and also the bars of his floor mat gym.
8. He is very playful and he loves music
9. He has only tried sweet potatoes and squash but squash seems to be his favorite

It amazing me thing things infants learn and how fast they learn. Which each new stage it seems to bring new challenges and new joys. Motherhood is really rewarding!

Four Month Immunizations

As some of you know Derek got his four month shots last Friday. He has some yucky reactions/ side effects.
Friday(the day he got the shots) he was just sleepy and fussy. Both side effact that I expected. We gave him Tylenol as the doctor had instructed. And he was fine.
Saturday morning he was still fussy. I took off his band-aids and he looked normal. There were tiny red dot where he had gotten the shots. Derek threw up most of the day. It wasn't projectile- just a lot of spit up even after 2 1/2 hours had passed since his last feeding. Thats very unusal for him. Saturday he refused to sleep. He fought naps and bed time more that he has in a long time. By night time I noticed he had big knots on his legs. They were swollen and red
On Sunday he was even fussier and still refusing to sleep. The knots were still there. I called the doctor to find out if that is normal and they said it does happen but to draw a line around it to make sure it isn't getting worse. I drew a big line around the bump and a little line around the redness.
The above picture is from Sunday and the one below is from Monday.

Thankfully, it has all cleared up now and is much better! Derek is back to his old self. No more bump or redness. He is so much happier.

Sorry, I got a little bit behind of my blogging. We had some out of town company last week and I am just now catching up. I have a few new things to share.

Another thing that is new is that my baby boy had his first taste of baby food. We decided to start with sweet potatoes and here is why.

1. As a baby my husband had bad allergies to rice. Since Derek seems to share my husband's milk allergy we didnt want to risk rice cereal. My husband grew out of both allergies
2. I have read and gotten advice for a lot of new mom's saying that fruit first can give the baby a sweet tooth and they wont like veggies as much
3. Meats are the hardest to digest and may give them a belly ache.

He did pretty well. He seemed to like it. We tried it for a few days since he was so hungry all the time because of a groweth spurt. But then he seem to lose interest when the groweth spurt was finished. We will probably try again in anohter few weeks.

I have read a ton of articles on the subject of how to know when your baby is ready for food. You should be able to say "yes" to all or the majority of the following

1.The ability to sit up and hold head up unassisted 2. Interest in your food 3.Doubling of birth weight 4. Frequently waking in the middle of the night when a solid sleeping pattern had been established 5. Baby's tongue-thrust reflex gone or diminished

My sweet baby boy is about three and a half month now. A few day ago I noticed he was drooling a whole lot and that he was wanting to chew on everything he could get his tiny little hands on. This is a fairly new thing for him. He didnt really put thing in his month besides his hands or his bottle (Well, he likes to try and hold his bottle himself while he eats). He was also getting fussy for no reason. He was fed, burped, changed, rested and had no real reason to fuss. I thought he was past the fussy phase of infancy. It seemed like things were getting so much easier and he was happy and now he is getting grumpy again. Then it hit me. I washed my hands and felt around in hi mouth and sure enough there it was. My little man is getting his very first tooth! Its on the bottom and it has barely broken through the gum.
This little baby tooth seems to be bothering him quite bit. I gave him some Tylenol but it didn't work very long and he cried again before he could have some more. I hate to give him too much medicine. I would rather not put a bunch of medcine in his systom with him being so young. I called my pediatrician and she said not to give him Motrin until he is over 6 month old and to be careful how much Tylenol we give him. She recommended we try a little baby oral gel. Just a little because it goes a long way. I asked her about teething tablets or teething drops. She said to be careful and follow the directions, and try not to give it to him very often because they do have a sedative in them. That's something I didnt know. I guess explains why when we tried it he went right to sleep.
So far we tried the Tylenol and the teething drops and of course a good teething toy. Derek really enjoyed the teething toy. It was something to play with and to "eat". I am hoping this tooth break through ASAP! The pediatrician said that when it does break through, he will feel so much better and not be so fussy. Ok, I better end this now before it becomes an book instead of a blog entry :)

First time leaving a baby with a sitter

This Saturday will be my first time leaving Derek with a sitter. My husband and I are going boogie boarding. I've never been before and I'm really excited. I'm am also nervous Derek is never away from me for longer than a half an hour.
I read these are somethings that will help make thing easier.

1)Have more than one number for the sitter to call. If she cant get a hold of you by one number then its good for her to have someone else to call in an emergency and list the places that you will be
2) Leave a list of instructions. Its good to explain things but if the sitter forget its good to have a reminder.
3) Have list allergies just in case.
4) Show the sitter where everything is and keep things easily accessible and well stocked such as diapers, wipes..etc
5) For your first time leaving your kid with the sitter, its especially good to pick someone you know well and trust. It will put you mind more at ease.

I know a lot of that is common sense but its a good reminder. If any one has anything to add feel free to comment.
They say the first time leaving your kid with the sitter is the hardest. I am looking forward to getting out but I'll miss my little boy.

Does your diaper hold up?

So my son Derek is finally sleeping through the night. YAY! Its a good thing but he seem to always wake up wet. Every night my 3 month old's diaper over flows. Maybe he is getting too big for size? Maybe his diapers are too cheap?

I am thinking about buying a different brand of diaper and put them all to the test? I hate to wake up in the middle of the night to change him when I just got him sleeping.
Suggestions are welcome :)
